Clinical studies on 32 subdural effusions

Abstract
This is a clinical study of 32 cases with subdural effusion who has been admitted to Severance hospital from Jan. 1966 to Dec. 1975. And following result has been obtained.
1. Among 32 cases, 19 were male and 13 were female. Their ages were ranged from 3 days to 37 months with peak incidence 2 to 6 months. And 12 cases had abnormal delivery history.
2. The chief problems on admission were convulsion; 19 cases, vomiting; 9 cases and poor sucking; 6 cases. Abnormal physical findings on admission were bulging anterior fontanel; 20 cases, high fever; 5cases and enlarged head(over 97 percentile in head circumference);5cases.
3. Twenty cases had abnormal findings in transillumination (80%) among 25 cases performed the test. Eleven cases over 31, had abnormal CSF findings. Among the 11 who had CSF culture, 3 of them showed H. influenzae, 1 E. coli, 1 Streptococci, and 1 Staphylococci. Subdural tap was performed on 32 cases, abnormal finding (more than 2ml of subdural fluid, with more than 40mg% of protein) was noticed in 30 cases.
4. The etiology of subdural effusion was thought; traumatic in 13 cases, postmeningitis 11, bleeding tendency 1, and idiopathic 7 cases.
5. Eleven of these 32 cases were expired, and the mortality rate was 34.4%.
